(Syzygium luehmannii)

Family: MYRTACEAE

Habit: A medium tree up to 20m high with a spread of 6m.

Habitat: Subtropical and littoral rainforest from Kempsey NSW to Cooktown QLD.

Identifying Features:

Leaves: Tear shaped, 3 - 6.5cm long with new growth being bright pink in colour.

Flower: Cream to white, appearing mainly from September to February.

Fruit: 8 - 20mm long, pear shaped, dull red when ripe and ripening mainly in summer.

Aboriginal Use: Aboriginals no doubt ate the spicy sweet fruits of this species which have a taste similar to cloves (a closely related species from Asia).
